Apneseth is one of Norway’s foremost photographers, with a very keen eye for portraying people in their own environments. His pictures have an innate power in their content, composition and journalistic substance.

He chooses to work on projects in his immediate vicinity, which presents special challenges, but can also be an advantage in his approach to the stories he tells. His experience, visual language and ability to carry through larger projects have been decisive, and will benefit everyone in the group.

Excerpt from the project description

SOFT

Founded in 1977, Sogn og Fjordane Theatre (SOFT) is one of Norway’s smallest regional theatres. It has a staff of 16 carrying out the equivalent of 25 full-time jobs. Last year the theatre received a Hedda Award (Norwegian theatre prize) for its ground-breaking productions of new Norwegian drama, mainly with a local basis. SOFT is a touring theatre – a sort of extreme variety of touring theatre. The technical and artistic ensemble travels all over the county, which is somewhat inaccessible in places, constructing stages in cultural centres, schools and community centres along the fjords, under glaciers, and on islands.

My approach consists of an independent documentary photo project based on the theatre’s activities in the broadest sense. This includes everything from building sets, sewing costumes and administrative tasks, to travelling. It also encompasses guest actors, directors and choreographers. It is a combination of traditional photographic/documentary presence and portraits. In addition, I create photo tableaux based on actual situations that arise in the course of the theatre’s activities.
