Norwegian Journal of Photography\u00a0(NJP) and\u00a0Fritt Ord\u00a0invite the public to the seminar Photographs Lie, Photographers Don\u2019t, with Donald Weber. The seminar will take place\u00a0on\u00a0Friday 9 October 2015 at 5 p.m. (from 5.00\u20136.30 p.m.) at the Fritt Ord Foundation, Uranienborgveien 2, Oslo.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Photographer Donald Weber argues for the return of control over the image, giving authorship to the photographer, and reducing the current dominance of technique and aesthetics in photojournalism. Photojournalism as ethics, as a genre, has been hijacked by \u201cphotojournalism\u201d \u2013 the style. The style suggests then \u201ctruth\u201d, objectivity, justice, the rule of error, et cetera.<\/p>\n

How is it that when photographing action the idea of \u200b\u200bwhat photojournalism is and should be is going to be undermined?<\/p>\n

\u201cA story needs someone to tell it.\u201d Will we be able to take back the meaning of photojournalism, and give meaning to our readers, through authorial photographs? It\u2019s our only hope.<\/p>\n

Prior to photography, Donald Weber originally trained as an architect and worked with Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.\u00a0Weber is the author of three photography books, including Interrogations, about post-Soviet authority in Ukraine and Russia, published to much acclaim.<\/p>\n

He is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, and two World Press Photo Awards. Several projects have been exhibited at exhibitions and festivals worldwide. Currently Donald Weber is working on his next project, War Sand, about historic sacrifice, and the meaning of war in our modern world.<\/p>\n

The seminar is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n
