On Thursday, 8 February, NJP photographer Elin Høyland will be opening her exhibition Brother In Sister at the Bi-Z Gallery in Mandal.
The project, which was published in book form by the Dewi Lewis Publishing House in 2015 under the title ‘Brother In Sister’, is Høyland’s second major documentary project about pairs of siblings. Her first, ‘The Brothers’, garnered recognition from far beyond the borders of Norway.
Consisting of 23 photographs, the exhibition in Mandal tells the story of Edvard and Bergit Bjelland, a brother and sister who grew up on a small farm in an out-of-the-way corner of southwestern Norway. Even though they lived close to each other, they lived very different lives.
Elin Høyland met Edvard for the first time shortly after his sister Bergit had passed away. He then lived alone on the farm and he still kept some sheep.
As for the magazine «Photography», Høyland recounts how the project took shape:
«During the process, I began to think that I might be able to make this project my own, especially when Edvard showed me his sister Bergit’s house, which was located right next to the farm. I understood immediately that this was a gift that I had to take advantage of», smiled the NJP photographer whose day job is with the financial daily Dagens Næringsliv.
From Thursday and through 24 February, a selection of the photographs from the project will be on exhibit at Galleri BI-Z in Mandal.
